iPhone 5: The Good and The Bad

image
Here's my personal take on the latest iPhone (iPhone 5, which is actually the 6th iteration). For technical specifications and technical details, i should refer you to Apple:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

I don't want to drown you more with very detailed and unadulterated review and description. Cyberspace already contains a lot of those. So, let me just focus on practical usage from my point of view (who else. lol). Since my previous phone was iPhone 4 (not 4S) i would also add a few comparisons here and there.

Overview:
I got the black iPhone 5 16Gb. Yes, i actually prefer the 16Gb over the 32, 64Gb models. My previous iPhone 4 was also 16Gb - and i haven't been able to fill it up. So, it is a matter of preference and usage. I only put in specific songs (the rest stays on the desktop), and i don't usually watch movies (unless from youtube) on my phone.

iPhone: Perk up your photos with 100 Cameras In 1

These days i’ve got really nothing else to do but laundry or kill time at a cafe. Of course, i prefer the latter! Thankfully, most cafes i stay at have free Wi-Fi. That also means i’ve got almost close to unlimited time surfing the net – which, for a big part of, i spent checking the latest free Apps for the iPhone.

image In the top 25 or something apps, there is 100 Cameras in 1. This app lets you modify your photos, applying one or several filters that enhances their appearance. For the free version, you only get some of the filters but if your only killing time – then that should be enough.

How To: Use iPhone 4 as a Personal Hotspot (Globe Tattoo SIM)

Thanks to the 4.3 iOS, iPhone 4 owners can now turn their phones into a personal WiFi Hotspot! Woohoo!

It beats buying a separate 3G hotpot device or router!

(although, i'm not sure if this feature has already been supported by some jailbroken app. this time it is natively supported by the iOS).

In this HowTo, we’ll be setting up the personal hotspot using a postpaid Globe Tattoo SIM. We’ll be needing the following:

1. A Tattoo SIM (or any SIM that is 3G enabled) – cut into a microsim if necessary (see my separate post)

2. iPhone 4 that’s been updated to the latest iOS version (4.3 up)

3. Other wi-fi enabled devices (laptop, other phones, e-readers)

How To: Use a new SIM for iPhone 4 internet browsing

Okay, there really is ‘supposed’ to be no need to give this how to since by default, you should be able to browse the internet using a 3G connection. Well, that’s not usually the case, particularly for iPhones that were factory unlocked and is now using a different SIM/carrier.

iPhone Headset Controls

Back Camera The headset that came with your iPhone 4 isn’t just for listening or changing the volume, it’s got a very simple set of controls but works intuitively with iPhone operations. Since there are still a lot who may not know the purpose of the middle button (the depressed gray area in between the + and – symbols (of the volume), I’ve decided to post this.

Here’s a quick reference for the headset controls:

How To: Set iPhone 4 to Permanent Portrait Orientation

If you already know about the iPhone 4 feature for double-tapping the home button (see post here), then you may already know about the Portrait orientation setting as well.

If you happen to miss that, here's a quick tip.

How To: Turn off background apps on the iPhone 4

A teammate of mine, just told me this ‘new’ feature of the iPhone 4 that i wasn’t aware of. It’s ‘new’ to me since the feature was not present in the iPhone 2G which i had for the longest time.

The iPhone 4 supports background apps, unlike the 2G. Well, technically, it isn’t the hardware but the software OS that supports it.

Anyway, you can view the apps running in the background by simply double tapping the home button.
