EFI BIOS : A Pleasant Surprise

I've nonchalantly pressed the key several times now, waiting for the screen to get filled up with simplified colors of mostly blue and white. The glorified BIOS is coming, i thought.
Then boom!

To my surprise a GUI, complete with mouse, graphics and tabs appears in front of me. I was struggling with a moment of confusion as i don't remember installing this OS or app during the course of my 'primordial' task of setting up a new PC at this new office.

Powerloqic 2Go ZeroFlex USB Mouse (best with Netbooks)

note: I don’t really go reviewing hardware but due to boredom – i ended up starting this post about the mouse i bought yesterday.

Powerloqic 2Go Zero Flex USB mouse isn’t a gamer’s mouse nor is it even a high-end mouse. In fact, it is one of the cheapest – that’s why i got it in the first place. I was looking for a highly portable mouse that could accompany my netbook when i travel. Using a netbook, i intend accessories to be as lightweight, portable and as inexpensive. I didn’t want a mouse that was as heavy as the laptop it was connecting to or is half its price. Good thing i’ve found Powerloqic’s product on one of the stalls in the IT shop.

ZeroFlex is quite nicely designed, coming in almost all black with just simple colored lines. It is quite sleek – as with most of their other models. Their line up are consistent with that form factor and layout. Even the packaging is nicely done.

Essential App: Microsoft Security Essentials

We all have a set of applications that we can’t seem to live without. What with all the software that’s been created, we’re bound to pick our favorites – be it necessary or entertaining. I’ve decided to put a set of posts that would list and describe my favorite applications – focusing on the essential ones. These apps are the ones that i surely can’t live without (well, until i find a replacement. haha).

It’s just right to start this series of posts regarding Essential Apps with the one that has the most appropriate name.

Miscrosoft Security Essential.

Needless to say this is a Windows only app (from umm.. Microsoft).

One very good thing worth mentioning though, is that it is FREE!

This piece of software is essentially an antivirus, anti-spyware (anti-malware). It has a very simple user interface (see below) and doesn’t consume that much resources.

Internet Scare: Common Website Vulnerabilities

We’ve heard news about someone hacking google or facebook. We’ve heard about accounts being stolen or sabotaged. We’ve probably even seen a few movies about it! However, unless you’ve experienced or know a friend who have experienced it, you probably won’t realize how real and how much it could happen to you.

You’re probably aware of scams and phishing issues particularly if you do a lot of online shopping, but there are a lot graver threats out there that could harm both your online and offline life – and they could happen when you feel your most secure.

Recently, i’ve had a chance to learn (and develop) about these security threats, and i have become ‘aware’ of some of them. Triggered by the Halloween spirit, i’ve decided to put up a post regarding the scary things that people should really be aware of when doing things online. This is a sort of a sloppy-joe of info that could be useful for people from the technically-challenged to the technically savvy (if your a geek, then you probably already know this). I’ll also try to simplify the explanations as there are other more detailed resources out there that could present you with more ‘advanced’ info (check out the Resources sections).

I do not mean to scare people from using the internet. Well, i actually do! It’s Halloween!

Besides, we all should be a little more careful, especially these days, when technology can go so out of control.

Wi-tribe Wireless Internet Review

Overall: Good first 2 weeks! Then it just died out.

First of all, like my previous Sun broadband Review this is based solely on my experience. I live in Makati (near Market-Market Mall) on an elevated area. I use Windows 7 and Chrome almost exclusively. Your mileage will definitely vary.

 

If you don’t know what Wi-tribe is please check-out their site and google it as well, since this technology is also implemented elsewhere other than the Philippines. However, here is a brief intro:

 

Wi-Tribe (pronounced as why – tribe) Philippines uses 4G technology as opposed to the 3G technology that other companies(Globe, Smart, Sun) in the country is providing  for the targeted market of mobile broadband. It’s supposed to be the next, better technology, hence 4G (for 4th generation). Honestly though, there are some articles that say Wi-Tribe doesn’t actually using the ‘real’ 4G technology but somewhere between 3G and 4G. Google it for the details.
